Hacienda AltaGracia

Costa Rica

Property: Hacienda AltaGracia an Auberge Resort

Country: Costa Rica

Region: Pérez Zeledón, in the Southern Region near Cirro Chirripó National Park

Time difference: GMT -6 hours

Property size: 50 luxury casitas on 865 acres of lush mountains and rolling hills

Best time to travel: December to April marks Costa Rica’s dry season, which means more tourists but generally more favorable weather. Honeymooners in Costa Rica during the green season, May to November, tend to experience brief downpours in the late afternoon but fewer crowds and reduced prices.

Flight time to Costa Rica: Minneapolis to either Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport or San Jose International Airport roughly 5 and a half hours nonstop, or 8 hours with a short layover and connecting flight. Hacienda AltaGracia is an additional 25-minute flight or three-hour drive.

Why I’m smitten: Hacienda AltaGracia is a secluded respite with some seriously luxurious amenities. Located on 865 acres in the agricultural capital of Costa Rica—and near the country’s tallest mountain, Cirro Chirripó standing more than 12,500 feet tall—the boutique property offers honeymooners a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Guests are able to immerse themselves in authentic Costa Rican experiences including ultra-light flights, whale watching, biking, zip lining, cooking classes and much more, all while Hacienda AltaGracia boasts one of Central America’s largest and most renowned spas (with only 50 casitas on the property, that’s saying something). With luxe suites and even more spectacular casitas, you might end up extending your honeymoon for, well, ever.

Travel tip: Arrive at Hacienda AltaGracia in comfort and style by opting to travel from Liberia International Airport or San Jose International Airport on one of the resort’s private planes or its helicopter, all of which land just minutes from the lobby on a private airstrip. (Alternately, you can fly commercially on Sansa Airlines to the nearby San Isidro Airfield.)
